Taxi in Stockholm
Taxi information for visitors in Stockholm: prices, taxi ranks, apps and travel between central Stockholm and Arlanda.
Quick checklist
Before taking a taxi in Stockholm
- Check the price before you get in
Stockholm does not have a single city taxi tariff. Swedish taxi companies generally set their own fares, so compare the yellow price information or confirm a fixed price before departure.
- Choose the taxi you want
You do not have to take the first taxi in a queue. At Stockholm Central Station, Jernhusen operates a quality-assured taxi area outside the main entrance on Vasagatan.
- Use a booking app or pre-booking when useful
Taxis in Stockholm can be booked by app or phone as well as taken from taxi ranks. When you book by app or phone, you usually receive price information before the journey, making it easier to compare options and plan the cost.
- Keep your taxi receipt
The journey receipt can help identify the vehicle, taxi company and driver if you leave something behind or need to complain.
Using taxis in Stockholm
For a visitor, using a taxi in Stockholm is straightforward once you understand one important feature of the Swedish market: different taxi companies can charge different fares for the same journey. Stockholm does not set one common taxi tariff for the city.
You can normally get a taxi from a taxi rank, book one by phone, or use a taxi or ride-booking app. Visit Stockholm specifically identifies app, phone and taxi ranks as common ways to obtain a taxi in the city.
Whichever method you use, the national Swedish taxi rules still matter. A licensed taxi uses a taxi-registered vehicle, and the driver's taxi identity card must be displayed where passengers can see it. Taxi-registered vehicles have yellow number plates.
If you are choosing a car from a rank or on the street, take a few seconds to check the price information before entering. Our Choosing a Taxi guide gives the short pre-ride checklist.
Taxi ranks and transport hubs
Taxi ranks are available around Stockholm, including at major transport hubs. One location where there is particularly clear official information is Stockholm Central Station.
Jernhusen, which owns and manages the station, states that quality-assured taxis are available outside the station's main entrance on Vasagatan. Jernhusen also has taxi hosts in yellow jackets there on weekdays from 07:00 to 22:00 to assist passengers.
The station arrangement includes its own quality requirements. Jernhusen states that participating taxi companies commit to a price guarantee under which the fare must not exceed the relevant area's normal tariff by more than 10 percent. This is a station-specific arrangement, not a general price rule for all taxis in Stockholm.
Stockholm Central and Cityterminalen: know the difference
Jernhusen lists a taxi stop outside Cityterminalen's main entrance at Klarabergsviadukten 72. On the same page, Jernhusen separately identifies the taxis outside Stockholm Central's main entrance on Vasagatan as quality-assured.
Sweden Taxi Guide has repeatedly observed independent taxi operators using the taxi rank outside Cityterminalen's main entrance. These taxis are outside the Jernhusen quality-assured rank described for Stockholm Central on Vasagatan.
That does not by itself make an independent taxi a poor choice. Swedish taxi companies generally set their own fares, so check the displayed price information on the individual vehicle rather than judging the taxi only by whether you recognise the company name.
Common Stockholm situations
Arriving by ferry or cruise ship
Stockholm has several separate port areas. Värtahamnen and Stadsgården have extensive ferry traffic, while international cruise ships use port areas including Frihamnen, Stadsgården and Skeppsbron.
Practical tip: Because different ferry and cruise services use different port areas, check the exact port, terminal or quay stated by your ferry or cruise operator before taking a taxi. Simply asking for “the harbour” is not precise enough in Stockholm. If you do not remember the port name, tell the driver which ferry or cruise company you are travelling with and, if possible, the route or ship, and confirm the destination before departure.
Travelling with a wheelchair or reduced mobility
Wheelchair-accessible taxis are available in Stockholm, but availability can be limited. If you need a ramp, space for a wheelchair or another specific accessibility feature, book in advance where possible and describe your requirements when booking.
At Stockholm Central Station, the taxi staff at the quality-assured area can also help passengers find a suitable service for needs such as wheelchair accessibility.
Taxi prices in Stockholm
There is no special regulated Stockholm taxi fare. The same national pricing principle applies here as elsewhere in Sweden: taxi fares are generally freely set by the operator. This means two taxis waiting in the same part of Stockholm can have different tariffs.
Taxi-registered vehicles must display price information outside and inside the vehicle. The prominent comparison price represents a typical journey of 10 kilometres taking 15 minutes and is designed to make different tariffs easier to compare.
Do not treat the comparison price as a quote for your actual Stockholm journey. It is a comparison tool. If you want certainty about the actual cost, ask whether a fixed price is available before departure or use a booking method that gives you the price in advance.
For the full explanation — including comparison prices, fixed versus metered fares and the special rule for very high comparison prices — see Taxi Prices in Sweden.
Taxi apps in Stockholm
Taxis in Stockholm can be booked by app as well as by phone or from taxi ranks. Visit Stockholm also lists international services including Uber and Bolt as operating in the city, alongside Swedish taxi companies and their booking services.
When you book by app or phone, you usually receive price information before the journey, which can make it easier to compare options and plan the cost. The Swedish Transport Agency also states that the rules governing taximeter use apply to drivers working for app-based services.
Availability, products and prices offered by individual apps can change, so Sweden Taxi Guide does not rank apps or promise that one service will always be cheapest. See Taxi Apps in Sweden for the dedicated guide.
Stockholm and Arlanda Airport
Stockholm Arlanda Airport is outside central Stockholm and has its own Swedavia taxi arrangements. If you are arriving at the airport, do not assume that an ordinary Stockholm street-taxi situation applies.
At Arlanda, Swedavia recommends following signs for “Taxi, Approved Taxi”. Contracted taxis are available outside the arrivals halls at Terminals 2 and 5, and Swedavia applies a maximum-fare arrangement for contracted taxi journeys from the airport to addresses within a defined geographical zone.
Because those rules are local and time-sensitive, use our Taxi at Stockholm Arlanda Airport guide for the current maximum fare and pickup instructions rather than relying on the general Stockholm guidance on this page.
Taxi or public transport in Stockholm?
Stockholm has an extensive public-transport network of metro, buses, commuter rail and other services. For many journeys in the central city, public transport can be a practical alternative to taxi.
Ticket types, prices, validity rules and payment options can change. For current fares and ticket information, check the official SL website before travelling.
A taxi may make more sense when you want door-to-door transport, are travelling late, have substantial luggage, have mobility requirements, are travelling as a group, or your origin or destination is inconvenient by public transport. Compare convenience, total cost and the needs of your group.
