Quick checklist

Before confirming an app-booked taxi

  1. Check the pickup point and destination

Review the written address and, where the service provides one, the map location before confirming. This can be especially useful at stations, hotels and airports with several nearby pickup areas.

  2. Read the price information before confirming

Check whether the amount shown is fixed, estimated or otherwise described by the service, and review any stated conditions or additional charges before booking.

  3. Match the vehicle before getting in

If the booking service provides vehicle or driver details, compare them with the car and driver that arrive before starting the journey.

  4. Keep the booking and receipt

Keep the booking details together with the receipt or payment confirmation so you have a record of the journey and charge if you later need support.

How taxi apps work in Sweden

Taxi-app features vary by service. Depending on the provider, the app may let you enter a pickup location and destination, view ride options and price information, identify or track an assigned vehicle, and pay through the app.

The important point is that booking through an app does not place the journey outside Sweden's taxi rules. Transportstyrelsen specifically addresses app services in its taximeter guidance. When an app-booked taxi uses a taximeter, the same taximeter requirements apply as to other taxi journeys.

If the price has been agreed in advance, Transportstyrelsen states that the driver must register that price in the taximeter before the journey begins. If no price has been agreed in advance, the taximeter must be used to calculate the fare.

There is also a second legal system. A taxi may use approved special equipment for taxi vehicles instead of a taximeter. In that system, every journey must be pre-booked through a licensed booking centre, the price must be fixed in advance, the customer must receive evidence of the agreed price before the journey, and payment goes to the booking centre.

Which taxi apps are available in Sweden?

Visitors can use both app-based booking platforms and apps operated by individual taxi companies in Sweden.

Uber and Bolt both offer ride booking in Sweden. Availability is location-dependent: Uber tells passengers to check which taxi options are available locally, while Bolt states that available ride types and coverage vary by location.

Taxi companies also operate their own apps. Taxi Stockholm offers app booking, fixed-price or taximeter options, payment features and real-time taxi tracking. Sverigetaxi offers fixed-price app booking, trip-status updates, map tracking and in-app payment.

Price and booking information

Price information is not presented in exactly the same way by every service. Bolt states that it provides an upfront price estimate after you enter your destination. Uber's Stockholm taxi service shows an estimated final price when the ride is confirmed and notes that the price may be adjusted if, for example, surcharges or tolls differ from the estimate.

Taxi-company apps can use different booking models. Taxi Stockholm states that its app lets passengers choose between taximeter and fixed-rate booking, while Sverigetaxi states that its app provides a fixed price before the booking is confirmed.

Practical comparison: before confirming a booking, check whether the amount shown is fixed or estimated, which ride or service category you selected, and whether any additional charges are stated. Compare the actual offer rather than assuming that all taxi apps use the same pricing model.

For the national rules behind taxi pricing, see Taxi Prices in Sweden.

Check the car and driver before getting in

Some booking apps provide information that can help you identify the assigned vehicle and driver. Uber, for example, states that after a driver has been matched, the app shows the driver's photo together with the vehicle's make, model and registration number. Uber advises passengers to compare those details with the arriving car before getting in.

Practical check: at a busy pickup point, compare the identifying information provided by your booking service with the vehicle and driver that actually arrive. If the details do not match, resolve the discrepancy through the app or booking service before starting the journey.

The underlying Swedish taxi requirements still apply. The Swedish Transport Agency states that taxi services may only be performed by licensed taxi companies using licensed taxi drivers and taxi-registered vehicles. Bolt also states that vehicles on its Swedish platform must meet the Swedish Transport Agency's requirements and be assigned to an operator with a valid taxi traffic permit.

Payment and receipts

Payment options differ between booking services and can also vary by location. Bolt supports credit or debit card payment in the app and states that other payment methods may also be available depending on location. Uber likewise states that available payment methods can vary by region. Taxi-company apps may also offer in-app payment.

Practical record: keep the booking details together with the receipt or payment confirmation. This gives you a record of the journey and charge if you later need to contact the booking service or taxi company.

For taxis using a taximeter, app payment does not remove the taximeter requirements. Transportstyrelsen explicitly says the rules also apply when both booking and payment take place through an app. A taximeter receipt must be offered after the journey; it may be electronic if you can receive it.

See Payment & Receipts for the full explanation, including the different rules for taxis using the special-equipment system.

Using taxi apps at airports

Airport taxi pickup arrangements can differ from ordinary street pickups. Practical check: when using an app or pre-booked taxi at an airport, follow the pickup instructions provided for that booking and compare them with the airport's own taxi signs and guidance.

Stockholm Arlanda Airport is a particularly important example. Swedavia tells passengers to choose an airport-approved taxi and follow signs for “Taxi, Approved Taxi”. Swedavia states that contracted taxis are located outside the arrivals hall at Terminal 5 and outside Terminal 2. Only drivers with a pre-booked car are allowed inside the arrivals hall to meet passengers, and Swedavia warns passengers not to accept unsolicited taxi offers from drivers inside the terminal.

If you are using an app or pre-booked taxi at Arlanda, check the pickup instructions for that booking and read our Taxi at Stockholm Arlanda Airport guide before travelling. Arlanda's airport-specific taxi arrangements and price-zone rules are more detailed than the general guidance on this page.

App-booked taxi or taxi rank?

Practical comparison: neither booking method is automatically the better choice for every journey. An app may provide booking, pickup and price information on your phone, depending on the service. At a taxi rank, Swedish taxi vehicles must display their price information, and Transportstyrelsen states that you are free to choose the taxi that suits you rather than taking the first car in the queue.

Sweden has free taxi pricing, so compare the actual offer rather than assuming that a familiar app brand, a taxi rank or a particular booking method will automatically provide the best value. Check the price information and the service being offered for that specific journey.
